An officer from the New Canaan Police Department on patrol at approximately 1:15 a.m. on Tuesday morning spotted a vehicle traveling off exit 36 of the Merritt Parkway fail to obey a red light, turning right without making a complete stop before turning south onto Old Stamford Road, prompting the traffic stop.

During the stop, the officer said that while speaking with the driver, Stamford resident Jeffrey Beltran, he observed the black grip of a handgun in the back seat, partially concealed with a towel, which Beltran stated was a BB gun with the similar appearance of a .357 revolver, complete with a chrome and black handle.

Further investigation of Beltran and his vehicle led to the seizure of the gun, which was loaded, and six more BB rounds, which were located. Beltran was subsequently arrested and charged with illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle.

Beltran is currently being held on $5,000 bond and has been transported to Norwalk Court.
